Myanmar has abundant energy resources, particularly hydropower and natural gas. The hydropower potential of the country’s rivers is estimated to be more than 100,000 megawatts (MW). Myanmar has identified 92 potential large hydropower projects with a total installed capacity of 46,101 MW.
Proven gas reserves total 11.8 trillion cubic feet (tcf) with huge potential for discovery. A third of the country’s $13.6 billion in foreign direct investment is in the oil and gas sector (as of September 2011). Myanmar is one of the five major energy exporters in the region, particularly of natural gas.
